Ken Wilson, a PG&E customer in Vacaville, California, noticed his electricity bills were increasing, so he started taking measures to reduce electricity usage. But this did not reduce his bills. He decided to get to the bottom of the matter.

After buying a device to track his electricity consumption, Wilson discovered that his meter was still running even when his breaker was off. Wilson said he contacted PG&E about the issue and they sent a representative to his apartment to check his meter, who made it clear that something was indeed wrong.

The utility company said in a statement that Wilson had been paying the electric bill for the apartment next to his “possibly since 2009,” three years after he moved in. “Our initial investigation determined that the customer’s apartment meter number may have been billed to another apartment since 2009,” a PG&E spokesperson said.

It was a shocking thing for Wilson. But the good thing was that the company admitted its mistake in the whole matter. The statement said that PG&E accepted the mistake and said that the company is “committed to rectifying the situation with the customer”. Wilson also apologized to him for the inconvenience caused. After this, the company urged other customers to verify their meter numbers to avoid similar problems.
